Glucosamine is an endogenous amino monosaccharide produced from glucose that is used in the manufacture of glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycan’s. Glucosamine is found in practically all human tissues, is highly concentrated in connective tissues, and is found in the highest quantities in cartilage. When given as an oral dose of glucosamine sulphate, approximately 90% of the glucosamine is absorbed and promptly integrated into articular cartilage in humans.
Glucosamine is available in a variety of forms, including sulphate, hydrochloride, N-acetyl-glucosamine, and chlorohydrate salt, as well as as a dextrorotatory isomer. There is some debate about which form is the most effective. According to pooled findings from trials utilising a specific commercial glucosamine sulphate product named Dona, this formulation relieves osteoarthritis pain while other formulations do not. Another study conducted in China suggests that glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulphate are both helpful.
