A camera attached to the Colposcope allows the doctor to take photographs or videos of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. This can be useful for documenting or showing the patient what the doctor sees during the exam.
Colposcopy enables the most serious lesion to be identified for adequate sampling. In general, agreement within one grade of illness is sought between the initial Pap test, colposcopic impression, and histologic grade. The Colposcope impression and histologic diagnosis, on the other hand, are the gold standard and ultimately define disease management and treatment. When the Pap test and the gold standard disagree, a complete review of the slides and maybe a repeat colposcopy are conducted.
