The solid form of Sodium Metabisulfite is white, crystalline, or powdery, and it has a faint sulphur scent. toxic when breathed in. irritates skin and tissue severely. Noncombustible, but when heated to a high temperature, it may breakdown and release deadly sulphur and salt oxide gases. When combined with water, a corrosive acid. both a scientific reagent and a food preservative. A 2:1 ratio of sodium and disulfite ions make up the inorganic sodium salt known as sodium disulfite. It serves as an antioxidant in food. It has a disulfite in it.

There are several ways to make Sodium Metabisulfite synthetically. Using sodium sulfite and sodium bisulfite solution is one of them. This solution gets some sulphur dioxide added to it. It keeps the solution's pH stable. The solution mentioned above receives NaOH.

The ions in the solution are in equilibrium as indicated below:

2HSO32- S2O2-5 + H2O

The aforementioned solution forms free Na+ ions with bisulfite ions and sodium metabisulfite when NaOH is added. More sodium metabisulfite is produced and the crystallisation process is improved each cycle.
