Artificial Grass has an array of advantages as compared to its natural-alternative. Synthetic turf does not require watering, mowing, tedious removal of unwanted weeds and offers low maintenance. Artificial turf works perfectly for your outdoor spaces such garden, patio and lawns all year round, without having to worry about mud in winter or autumn, dusty ground in summers, no worry about cracking or ever present weed during spring. With so many benefits of having artificial grass for garden, if you’re considering installing one in your lawn, read this guide on how to prepare your garden for artificial turf installation.
1.Removal of Existing Natural Grass :
This foremost step is quite obvious but commonly overlooked. The existing natural grass that’s currently in your garden area needs to be completely removed, preferably with a turf cutter and a spade. You will need a smooth, measured area dug on the surface of the ground where your new turf has to be installed. Make sure to dig deep enough so as to avoid any extraneous plant being left behind. Grass roots often go deeper so make sure to dig deep enough.
2.Eliminate the weeds :
Even the slightest space or gap left is enough for weeds to grow through, which can ultimately disrupt the pristine look of your lawn. Fake grass for garden allows drainage, because of this factor the ground below your fake turf will not be completely dehydrated which is not so good for weed control. To prevent this problem there is an option of placing a specially designed membrane which helps in preventing the weeds from intruding on your synthetic turf. This will significantly slow down, if not completely stop, any unwanted weeds growth. You should install the weed membrane layer below your new fake turf to help prevent those weeds.
3.Leveling out the playing field :
It is essential for you to ensure that the ground where you are going to install the turf for garden is leveled, smooth and as even as possible, before you start laying down your synthetic turf. You need to make completely sure that the surface does not have any bumps, stones or lumps that might make your new lawn uneven later on, as this will be much harder to deal with once your new grass is in place. This type of preparatory work will not only make the setting of artificial grass easier but will also help with drainage while making your lawn appealing.
4.Sub-base to create that perfect look for your lawn :
Apply a thin layer of crushed granite stone or any other crushed stone aggregate after leveling out the ground to consolidate. A 25mm layer is recommended for a solid base with good drainage system. Drainage is quite important if you want to keep your artificial lawn looking new and best all year round. You can also add a Geo-textile fabric layer which helps in stopping any unwanted weed from poking through the soil. You can now also add a sand or shock absorbing layer which will help in improving the feel of your new turf underfoot. At this stage, if you’re adding the weed membrane, make sure it is pinned down tightly into the ground and as evenly as possible to get the best finish.
5.Installation of Artificial Grass :
Once everything has been smoothened out, all that’s remaining is the installation of your new artificial lawn. You must cut your new artificial grass according to the right size and align it correctly and nail it down at each corner and voila your new lawn is ready. Just like every other thing in life, it’s not the process that’s difficult but the preparation requires awareness. Although the process for preparation of synthetic turf installation might seem elementary, make sure to get it right if you want your new garden to look aesthetically appealing. The same process will also help in laying artificial grass for balcony, artificial grass for patio, artificial grass for play area.
