Wonder Woman 1984 Obtains Almost $40 Million on its Offshore Opening Weekend
And things have just started for the Patty Jenkins’ film as it awaits its historic release in the United States on Christmas Day.
DCEU’s latest superhero venture, “Wonder Woman 1984,” directed by Patty Jenkins, starring Gal Gadot, is close to earning $40 million in its opening weekend in the overseas market. Mathematically, as per the report shared by Warner Bros., it has been estimated that the film has earned approximately $38.5 million from the tickets sold in theaters in the overseas markets. The Chris Pine and Gal Gadot starrer “Wonder Woman 1984” revealed itself in the abroad market in the preceding week.
The film was released in 32 countries, including China. In total, Wonder Woman was screened all throughout the weekend on 30,000 screens. The studio added that since the movie has been met with a largely positive review, the signs are there for a largely optimistic future.
As per the report shared by Warner Bros., the film has fared well in China, attaining a majority of the earnings (approximately $18.8 million). However, the film was not the best film in the country over the weekend-that feat was achieved by another local film.
Fans living in the United States have to wait some time more as the theaters and HBO Max are gearing up for its historic release on Christmas Day, i.e., Friday (December the 25th). To the utter dismay of some veteran filmmakers, Warner Bros. took a bold decision to release all of its upcoming films in the theaters and on HBO Max to counter the restriction imposed by the pandemic.
Nevertheless, we should be glad that finally, we can see what Patty Jenkins has made. The film has long been made, and though it was due for a release in the last year itself, it had to be pushed back because Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was already due for a release during that time. Then, it was set for a release date similar to the 2017 Wonder Woman film, but, as we know, the pandemic had gripped the world during that time. Ultimately, it has made its way to the Christmas Day of 2020, pushing Dune to 2021.
The 2017 film remained the biggest DCEU film up until the release of the Aquaman in 2018. The film had earned $800 million in 2017. However, it had been anticipated that the sequel would have surpassed that total under normal circumstances. Now, with pandemic restricting people’s activities, nobody is sure exactly how much “Wonder Woman 1984” would earn.
Warner Bros. has tried to be creative in unprecedented times. They stuck with their traditional theatrical release plan with “Tenet” but decided to send “The Witches” straight to their streaming service, which is HBO Max.
Now, they have decided to embrace a dual release plan for Wonder Woman 1984 and all the upcoming films which includes “Dune” as well.
