Veterinary oncology is a branch of veterinary medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in animals. Cancer is a leading cause of death in pets. In one study for veterinary oncology cancer, 45% of dogs aged 10 years or older died from cancer. Veterinary Oncology therapies aim to eliminate cancerous cells in pets permanently. Depending on the type of cancer, stage, and nature of the cancer, the veterinarian may recommend specific treatments such as targeted therapy, combination therapy, or chemotherapy.
Many of the same methods that doctors use to treat cancer in humans are used by veterinary oncologists to treat pet cancer. Biologics, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, and other treatments are among them.
