The use of an abrasive, sharp, hard material to wear away the surface of softer, less resistant materials. Natural and synthetic substances are included in the term, ranging from the relatively soft particles used in household cleaners and jeweler's polish to the hardest known material, the diamond.
Abrasives is a material that is used for grinding, polishing, and abrading. The degree of abrasive depends on the abrasive concentration, particle size, and particle morphology in the paste; they are inorganic salts with low solubility. Powders are generally more potent than pastes.
