In The Indian And Pacific Oceans, The Austronesian Peoples Used Catamarans To Reach The Islands
Catamarans

In the latter half of the 20th century, catamaran, a twin-hulled sailing and propelled boat, was designed for sport and leisure. Its structure is based on a raft made of two logs connected by planks that was once popular among inhabitants of the Indonesian archipelago as well as Polynesia and Micronesia. Originally paddled by numerous men, the earliest Catamarans could reach a length of 21.3 metres (70 feet) and were used for travel, combat, and exploration. Travels of more than 3,704 km (2,000 miles), particularly after the sail was fitted, were made. Catamarans built in the 1870s by the American America's Cup boat designer Nathanael Herreshoff competed so successfully against monohulled boats that they were prohibited from organised racing.
