Oat milk is a type of plant milk that is made by extracting the plant material with water from whole oat (Avena spp.) grains. Oat milk is produced in a variety of flavours, including sweetened, unsweetened, vanilla, and chocolate. It has a creamy texture and a flavour that is mildly reminiscent of oatmeal.
Oat milk was created in the 1990s by the Swedish scientist Rickard ste, unlike other plant milks, which date back to the 13th century. Oat milk sales in the United States increased ten-fold between 2017 and 2019, and one significant manufacturer, Oat Drink, reported a three-fold increase in global sales. By the end of 2020, the oat milk market had overtaken soy milk sales to take second place among plant milks in the country, trailing only almond milk.
