Prescription and over-the-counter medications, conventional and non-traditional medicines, simple small molecules, complex macromolecules, and big recombinant proteins are all used as treatments for gastrointestinal disorders and symptoms. Drugs for nausea and vomiting (antiemetics), prokinetic agents, laxatives, antidiarrheal agents, Digestive Drugs for acid peptic disease, drugs for irritable bowel syndrome, drugs for inflammatory bowel disease, and, of course, miscellaneous can be used to categorise these medications based on their intended uses. Rarely do medications used to treat digestive disorders harm the liver. This is due, in part, to the fact that they frequently have localised effects and limited systemic exposure. The immunomodulatory drugs used to treat inflammatory bowel disease are an exception; they are administered systemically, sometimes intravenously, and have the potential to harm the liver, although this seldom happens.
