10 Things You Should Know About Tooth Sensitivity

Do you have trouble when you taste your favourite ice cream? Does drinking tea or coffee cause a sharp and sudden pain which shoots deep into tooth nerve endings? If yes, then you are suffering from tooth sensitivity.

What is Teeth sensitivity?

The tooth’s roots are protected by a coat of a thin layer called ‘Enamel’ (above the gum line) and ‘Cementum’ (below the gum line). Under the enamel and cementum, there is a porous layer called ‘Dentine’. This dentine contains many tiny tubes leading toward the tooth’s nerve centre. As the dentine exposes, it starts transmitting hot and cold feelings directly to the roots causing pain. Hence, the patient experiences tooth sensitivity.

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity

Let’s quickly go through the common factors that cause teeth sensitivity.

1. Hard Brushing

If you have been brushing too hard or have been using a hard bristled toothbrush then over time the tooth enamel gets worn down. As a result, the dentine gets exposed.

2. Gum Recession

Our gums tissue pulls away from the tooth. Hence, the roots are exposed.

Some of us may have thin gum tissue genetically. The other may have developed these as a result of some periodontal disease.

3. Gum Disease

If you have inflamed and sore gums then most likely all the supporting ligaments have been lost. This too exposes the root surface.

4. Cracked Teeth

Chipped or broken teeth will fill bacteria from plaque. When this enters the pulp, it causes inflammation.

5. Use of Teeth Whitening Products

Many products have whitening chemicals in them for ex: bleach. This is one of the major reasons for tooth sensitivity.

6. Age

Our teeth sensitivity increases with age. It is the highest in the age range from 40- 50 years.

7. Plaque Buildup

The presence of excessive plaque can lead to tooth enamel wear. This can lead to sensitivity.

8. Prolog Use of Mouthwash

In case you have sensitive teeth then using mouthwash will worsen this problem. Mouthwashes contain acids which damage the dentin layer of the tooth.

9. Consumption of Acidic Foods

Consuming foods with high acidic contents like citrus fruits, tomatoes, pickles and tea can definitely lead to enamel erosion. Instead, prefer to consume fibre and milk-rich foods.

10.              Dental Procedures

Some of us may get this problem after a recent dental procedure like extractions, fillings etc. However, this is temporary and disappears shortly.

Treatments

The treatments for sensitivity surely depend on the cause. However, below we mention a few easy tips to deal with it:
