The installations require accessories that allow efficient and safe connections with the transformers, among which the connectors stand out. There are several brands that manufacture them, although the most recognized for the quality of its products. Its accessories are manufactured to provide effective terminations of medium and high voltage cables in underground, vault, plate mount, outdoor, indoor and transformer applications.
ELASTIMOLD IS SYNONYMOUS WITH QUALITY
Let's talk a bit about the Elastimold line before we get to the main topic of this post. It is considered the leading global producer of preformed cable accessories. The quality of its products is obtained through special formulations, which provide high-quality insulation and peroxide-cured shields. The components of the line are a sample of high technology in precast processes.
By using the products of this famous brand, you are assured of high-quality and durable work, as well as reliable non-degrading performance without resorting to maintenance. There are several advantages that their products provide over field fabrication and other options. The most notable are the following:
· All connectors are factory tested to strict standards, therefore quality is guaranteed before delivery and installation.
· They have a highly technological construction, but simplified into single pieces with integrated insulation surfaces.
· They have highly efficient sealing and shielding elements.
· Its installation does not require too much technical knowledge or complex tools, however, it is important to follow instructions to avoid damage.
· They are compact, light and durable, and can also be handled without problems.
· They do not need maintenance, since they are manufactured according to high quality standards and are subjected to rigorous tests, for this reason they are highly demanded for use in electrical systems such as the pedestal-type transformer.
PREVIOUS CONSIDERATIONS
The instructions that we will list are intended to establish a correct procedure to install the premolded bushings and adapters incorporated in pad-mounted transformers, occasionally junction boxes and submersibles. Before starting the process, it is important that you consider the following warnings.
· All equipment must be de-energized during installation or removal of precast components.
· Avoid handling the cables directly and with your hands while they are energized.
· Avoid excessive mechanical efforts during the assembly of the connectors, since they can cause failures in their operation.
· Check that the bushings and ground adapters do not show signs of damage, also confirm that their specifications are compatible with the rest of the accessories.
· The installation and activation of the equipment must be carried out only by trained technicians who know the safety regulations related to high voltage systems.
INSERT BUSHING INSTALLATION
Before tackling the installation of the bushing insert, you should be familiar with the well bushing. It is an element with a cavity to insert another component, for example, the bushing inserts. They are designed to function as an interface between the active part of the transformer and the accessories that will be used to make the connection to the system. It is worth mentioning that it is installed on the transformer.
Regarding the insert bushing, it must be installed inside the well bushing and is mated with the elbow type connectors or other components. Provides fully isolated connections for operations under load. Its constructive form makes it easy to install and replace in the field. To install it properly, follow the instructions below:
STEP ONE
Hold the well bushing and remove the high voltage protective cover. Regarding the bushing insert, they have to clean it, dry it and keep it free of contaminants. Then apply silicone lubricant evenly on the well bushing kit. Be sure to properly lubricate all rim and bottom cavities. Do not use a lubricant other than the one indicated by the manufacturer for any reason.
STEP TWO
Place the bushing insert into the well. Hand tighten clockwise to bottom out and final torque to 11.3 to 13.5Nm. Before tightening the bushing insert, remove the protective cover. Put the protector back on after tightening if you won't make the connection right away.
STEP THREE
Insert a strip of #14 copper wire into the side eye of the insert body. Use pliers to hold the wire and the eye. Wrap the wire against it and make two turns. Lastly, remove the excess wire and connect the other end to the ground terminal.
STEP FOUR
If you are going to install the elbow type connector, remove the protector and use a clean, dry cloth to remove any external impurities from the neck. Apply lubricant evenly around the outer surface of the insert bushing. If you will not install the elbow type connector, please leave the protective cover to avoid contamination.
INSTALLING THE GROUND ADAPTER
It is used to safely and easily ground the conductive jacket of the high voltage wiring that is brought to the pad-mounted transformer. To install it properly, follow the instructions below.
STEP ONE
Remove the screening elements to a length of 25.4 mm. Then put the recommended lubricant on top of the cable.
STEP TWO
Place the washer on the ground adapter. It is important that they lubricate inside the housing. Then slide the adapter back and forth over the cable.
STEP THREE
Phase the washer so that the corrugated contact fits the metal shield. It is important that they do not do it too much. Try, between steps, to turn the adapter housing 3 mm back. When they feel forces opposing the movement, the washer is tight.
STEP FOUR
Ground the wire from the elbow connector along with the wire coming out of the ground adapter. It is important that the grounding conductor of the adapter be copper and gauge number two or six.
There are other elements that are worth knowing about. One of them is the integral bushing, which summarizes the insert and the well bushing. It allows, through the elbows, to connect the high voltage wiring to the terminals of the primary winding. It is designed to work submerged in oil, in addition, it is delivered installed in the transformer.
