Many small engines used in generators and other power equipment use a foam filter that is coated with a light film of oil. The oil film attracts and traps the potential contaminants preventing them from entering the engine. This type of filter is easily cleaned and renewed, just follow the instructions in your owner’s manual. If there is more than a light film of oil, it could be from the engine breather system. The engine breather system is designed to allow combustion gases that make their way past the piston rings to escape the crankcase. These gases are routed back through the air intake so that any unburned hydrocarbons are re-introduced to the combustion chamber to be burned properly. During this process oil vapor can be carried through the system. In power equipment, if there is an excessive amount of oil in the air box it is usually due to the equipment being overfilled with oil (or being used on an incline).
