In the hybrid seed industry, RNAi has also been employed to produce male sterility, which is advantageous. RNA interference (RNAi) can be used to target genes that are only expressed in tissues involved in pollen generation. For instance, by suppressing the expression of TA29, a gene required for pollen formation, researchers have created tobacco lines that are male sterile. RNAi Technology was also utilised to reduce Msh1 expression in tomato and tobacco, which led to mitochondrial DNA rearrangements that are connected to cytoplasmic male sterility that occurs naturally.
