Using A Laser Diodes As A Laser Medium Involves Using The P-N Junction Of A Diode
Laser Diodes

A semiconductor device that is comparable to a light-emitting diode that emits a single wavelength or, in some situations, a narrow band of closely spaced wavelengths is known as a Laser Diodes (LD), sometimes known as an injection laser diode (ILD), or a diode laser. A semiconductor device called a laser diode generates intense coherent light. Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, or LASER, is the abbreviation. This diode uses stimulated emission as the basis for operation. A laser diode's P-N junction is comparable to an LED's, however unlike LEDs, a laser diode's P-N junction emits coherent radiation.

To create the n-type and p-type layers, gallium arsenide material is doped with silicon or aluminium. Moreover, a thin (a few nanometers) extra active layer of undoped GaAs is sandwiched between the two layers. To expand the region of the electron-hole combination, this layer is wedged between the p and n-type layers.
