Very low viscosity silicone known as Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) can be cast into silicone rubber sheets or used in injection moulding. To distinguish LSRs from high consistency gum-based silicone products, "liquid" is specifically stated in the name of the product. Contrary to the majority of silicones based on gum, which are typically peroxide cured, LSRs are addition cure/platinum cure systems. Liquid Silicone Rubber is a two-part liquid that is heated to speed up the curing process in its uncured raw state.
The curing process begins when Part A and Part B are combined. Raw silicones made of gum have a clay-like appearance and texture. While silicones based on gum are often compression moulded, Liquid Silicone Rubber are frequently injection moulded or cast. It should be noted that moulding liquid silicone rubber by injection is the opposite of moulding thermoplastics; whereas plastic pellets are melted into hot liquid and pressed into a cooled mould, liquid silicone compound is injected into and cured in a hot mould.
