One of the components of Caffenol, a homemade, non-toxic black-and-white photographic developer, is Instant Coffee. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), anhydrous sodium carbonate, and potassium bromide are also used in certain formulas as fog-reducers. These elements make up the fundamental formula. Caffeic acid appears to be the active component. The Rochester Institute of Technology conducted the first Caffenol research in 1995; ascorbic acid addition started about 2000 and produced the improved Caffenol-C, which is less likely to stain negatives than the original version. Experiments have revealed that less appealing, more affordable coffee brands are more effective for this use.
