Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is often diagnosed based on a combination of symptoms and diagnostic testing results. GERD, esophageal cancer, achalasia, hypereosinophilic syndrome, infection, Crohn's disease, and medication allergies must all be ruled out before EoE can be properly diagnosed. Prior to the creation of the EE Diagnostic Panel, Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) could only be diagnosed if gastroesophageal reflux did not respond to a six-week trial of twice-daily high-dose PPIs or if a negative ambulatory pH study ruled out gastroesophageal reflux illness (GERD). To distinguish the appearance of eosinophilic esophagitis on barium swallow tests from the appearance of temporary transverse folds frequently seen with esophageal reflux, the phrase "ringed oesophagus" has been used (termed "feline esophagus").
