Can the generator be switched from gasoline to propane while it is running? It depends on whether you have correctly set up the propane tank and performed a leak test.

Can I switch from gasoline to propane while my generator is running?

Can I switch my generator from gasoline to propane (or vice versa) while it is running?  The short answer is yes, most generators will allow for this process, assuming you already have your propane fuel source properly attached and leak tested.

Propane and gasoline are both very flammable and easily ignited with a high risk of fire or explosion!  For your safety, it is extremely important that you already have your propane tank properly setup and leak tested.  If not, shut off the generator and let it cool completely before setting up your propane tank and following this procedure.

While the generator is running, you will want to turn off any attached load and turn the gasoline fuel valve to the “off” position.  Let the unit continue to run and use up the fuel in the carburetor, once the machine starts to stumble/stutter, open the propane tank valve, and select propane as the fuel source on the generator itself.  The unit should smooth out once more and you can add your load again.  Do be aware that as propane has less available energy density in comparison to gasoline, the load capacity of the generator will be reduced and you may need to reduce the amount of electrical load on the generator as a result.
