An essential step in the identification of a number of ear disorders is the otoscopic examination. But there are a number of things that can make an Otoscope evaluation unsuccessful. For instance, insufficient training in otoscopic technique, cerumen blockage, improper positioning of the otoscope, and lack of confidence when doing the otoscopic examination can all prevent the process from being completed successfully. Since it is believed that around 75% of the tympanic membrane must be seen by otoscopy for a valid diagnosis, such circumstances may therefore result in unsuccessful treatment.
