They used magnetic resonance imaging to demonstrate that those who were listening to enjoyable music had the limbic and paralimbic portions of their brains active, which are linked to euphoric reward responses, such as those we feel from sex, delectable food, and addictive substances. But why? It's simple to see why food and sex give us a dopamine high because they make us want more, which helps with our survival and reproduction.

But why would a series of noises that had no apparent survival benefit act in the same way?
Meyer argued that music also accomplishes this.
It creates aural regularities and patterns that urge us to make assumptions about what will happen next. If we are correct, the brain rewards itself with a small amount of dopamine, as we now understand. Thus, the ongoing dance between expectation and result stimulates the brain with a delightful emotional play.

To the proper extent, performers and composers must adjust expectations as they walk a fine line. It's not enough, and the music is as dullly predictable as adults find nursery songs to be. All of this helps to explain why we see certain musical phrases and performances as evoking certain emotions. Meyer's theories have recently gained additional support thanks to a brain-scanning study by Zatorre and colleagues, which shown that connection between the "emotion" and "logic" circuits in the brain is particularly important for the rewards induced by music heard for the first time. We don't even know what kind of feeling we're talking about, which lies beneath all these thoughts. While without feeling depressed, we may recognize sorrowful music.
And even if we do experience melancholy, it is not the same as the sadness associated with a loss; instead, it can be joyful even when it causes us to cry.
Some music, such as some of Bach's, can evoke strong emotions even when we are unable to fully describe them.
Therefore, unless we have a clearer understanding of the nature of our emotional world, we will probably never fully comprehend why music arouses feelings.
