In this article, we will be discussing a brief history, purpose and benefits of online education.
A brief history of online education
The word 'online education emerged in the year 1999. The concept of online education was firstly discussed in the CBT seminar. The principles of online education were already suggested in the 19th century.
Before the launching of the internet, there was a trend of teaching students residing in distant places about particular courses or skills. In the 1840s, sir Issac Pitman taught their students about shorthand with the help of correspondence. The concept of this symbolic writing was so famous among journalists, individuals and other people who have to write. The system was used to mail Pitman's assignments to his students.
Teaching through slides and projectors was a common teaching method in the 1950s. Online learning has been on trend since the 1960s at Illinois University, USA. At that time internet was not present, so students were obliged to do learning by interlinking with each other through that network. Then the first online course program was offered by Toronto University in 1984. After three years of this event, the first-ever online learning program for both bachelor's and master's degrees was introduced by Phoenix University. After this event, the emergence of online learning was effectively initiated. Before this event, people were not likely to be known about the concept of online learning.
After this event, Britain University also introduced distance learning in the 1990s. Recently, Indra Gandhi National University in India has been taking enrollments of millions of students, and most of the students are enrolling on online education programs.
Nowadays, online education is not just limited to the educational systems but has also been implemented in workplaces for e-trainings. Online education is becoming widespread with 5g or 4g networking services. The future of online education is quite bright as it can be predicted from today. The concept of online education will move to huge expansions by leaps and bounds. The revenue educational systems and the related companies generated from online education was $187.87bn in 2019, and now it is increasing up to 400%.
The rapid growth of online education portrays not just its success but also students' priority of learning through technology. Forecasters have procrastinated that the upcoming wave of online education will have an effective and huge impact on the world.
Benefits of online education
The benefits of online education are infinite, but still, in this article, we will be discussing a few of them;
1. Flexible schedules
Students who are pursuing online education have greater flexible schedules. They can easily juggle their educational activities, workplace, and family. Students might access their academic staff by logging in to the desired link. In online education, not only are classes flexible, but exams are also flexible. If a student cannot give the exam, he can also search and pay someone to take my online exam. The flexibility in online education sighs relief to the students.
2. Self-pace learning
Students can study according to their own pace in online education. The self-paced learning helps students to absorb the idea of the lecture. Unlike the traditional classes where students were bound to take notes of the stern lectures the teacher presented, online education gives complete autonomy to students to study according to their specific learning and absorbing capability. In online education, the teacher uploads the lecture, and the student can see them as often as they want to clear their concepts. The lectures sometimes are in the form of videos and audio that can be paused whenever needed.
3. Customized learning
Students customize their studies schedule according to them. The students are given lots of customized online education. They can use textbooks, podcasts, visuals, etc., for their learning.
4. Communication with the course instructor
In traditional classes, students are not given time to discuss anything with the teacher once he leaves the class. In online education, students have their professor's contact numbers or email ids through which they can contact them.
5. Access to course programs
In traditional learning, students are taught fixed courses set by the teacher, but the criteria are somehow different in online education. Students are supposed to choose the online course programs according to their willingness. The students pick the courses they feel interested in and motivated in and ultimately score well.
Purpose of online education
Although the concept of online learning is old, it expanded a lot with the emergence of the coronavirus. The question here arises why educational systems still focus on online education even after the elimination of coronavirus. Following are the basic purposes of online education;
1. The purpose of online education is to give freedom to the students in their academics so that they might not feel pressurized, and there will be a decrease in suicidal cases as well that comes because of the unbalanced school life of the students.
2. Online education provides students with great exposure. From opting for favourite courses to customizing them to how to learn makes students self-sufficient; in this way, students' capability of self-exploration increases.
3. It allows students to study from anywhere at any time. This way, the infrastructure is saved in terms of electricity, pollution, etc.
4. Online education enables students to learn according to their unique capabilities that suit them in any way.
5. Gestures or postures that might bother the educator or students in the physical class might not be important in the online educational systems.
6. Through online education, the meetings of parents and teachers become more frequent and transparent.
7. Through personalized learning, deep analysis and scoring of students are made possible.
The background of online education is effective. Although the pioneer of online education has made today’s world easier by digitalizing the educational needs, now this is the responsibility of the educators and students and the entire educational system to make online education more successful and ensures integrity. Once the system of e-learning becomes chaotic, it will not remain sophisticated and adaptive.
